We are pleased to invite you to the first exhibition of Grupo < >, featuring work by its founding members Alva Mooses, Aurora De Armendi, Constanza Alarcón Tennen, Marcela Flórido and Mariana Garibay Raeke. The exhibition will be on view from January 25 to February 5, 2016 at the Experimental Gallery in Tjaden Hall at Cornell University.

In conjunction with this exhibition Grupo < > will present Subgenera of Contradictions on February 1 at 5:15 PM in Milstein Hall. This performative lecture is the outcome of a collaborative text through which the five artists explore issues of geography, migration, politics, art, history and gender by means of their individual experiences in the larger America. This collective text reveals the inadequacy of simple categorizations while bringing forward human concerns that are not limited to a place, race or gender.

The topography that determines our incomplete history stands on social riddles and political erraticism. The origins of our different narratives are rooted somewhere in Latin America and the Caribbean. The essence of this initial context, its distinct sounds, colors and textures will follow wherever we go. Our condition is transient, defined by the constant crossing of physical, social and political boundaries. This activity marks our lives and our work.

We find ourselves in a double bind; in the space that separates the places we have left from the unrest of our present. Grupo < > creates pauses in between this constant movement where we can share and examine the paradigms of our itinerant experience. This exhibition juxtaposes dissimilar objects that address shared questions. Each artist has built their own language with the traces of multiple places and times. These objects exist in parallel planes that overlap and diverge as they expose the complexity of a life in between; embodying a desire to remember, challenge and question an unreliable past that extends beyond our personal history.
